Despite various dissonances, Kyiv continues to consider the USA as an important partner. Nevertheless, President Selenskyj cannot help but some small swipes in the direction of Washington.
Despite some dissonances between Washington and Kiev, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj sees the United States as an important partner in his country. “If America remains strong and does not give in, we will also hold our position,” he said at the status of the current peace efforts in the Ukraine War in Paris in an interview with various European media, including ARD. “It is important that our partners remain strong too.”
However, Selenskyj criticized US politics with regard to the mediation efforts. The United States is strongly influenced by the Russian propaganda. Among other things, Russian narratives would be repeated in Washington. “This will not bring us closer to peace, the pressure from the United States on Russia will even weaken,” said Selenskyj in the ARD translation. Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is afraid of a united in the United States with Europe and therefore try to split Europe and the USA by means of all means.
At the same time, the Ukrainian President Moscow accused no interest in a ceasefire. He therefore hoped that US President Donald Trump exacerbates the sanctions against Russia. “Everything that brings us closer to the ceasefire brings us closer to peace.”
