Trump’s vice for rough in Greenland
With rumbling appearances and highly undiplomatic statements, Trump-Vice-vice JD Vance scares Europeans. Does he ignite the next escalation level in Greenland?
JD Vance, the Vice of US President Donald Trump, is different from his predecessors. While Trump’s Vice President, Mike Pence, mostly stumbled behind his boss with frozen smile and the democrat Kamala Harris remained rather pale until her nomination, Vance plays a much more prominent and louder role. He shy away from no controversy. So he now travels to Greenland with his wife Usha, where every step of the Trump government is observed.
Munich security conference and attack on Selenskyj
From the beginning, Vance switched to confrontation, around three weeks after the new US government took office, he sharply attacked the European allies at the Munich Security Conference and met AfD boss Alice Weidel. His riot course became apparent for the whole world at the scandal in the White House when he clashed the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in front of running cameras.
The magazine “Politico” wrote, Vance act as the president’s combat dog – a task that Trump’s full confidence needs, since he had to leave the spotlight to him. Vance was Trump’s right hand, said the spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, the magazine. According to the broadcaster CBS, the 40-year-old is said to have had his muscles played when confirming the cabinet members in the Senate in order to push through even the most controversial nominations.
The former Ohio Senator had to take a lot for his prominent role. In the renowned Kennedy Center in the capital Washington, he and Usha were booed by the audience, greeted by demonstrators when visiting a factory in the state of Michigan – Vance countered why they had time for protests.
Now JD Vance is traveling to Greenland – Ebenenerererererererererer, on which his boss has been eyeing for a long time. Actually, his wife should travel without him, but then he explained: “The excitement for Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday was so great – that’s why I decided that I don’t want her to have all the fun alone.”
Nobody invited the vances from the official Greenland government side. The capital of Nuuk currently has more important things to do: Two and a half weeks after a parliamentary election, the Greenland party leaders are in the process of forming a new government.
The fact that the Trump warehouse has been interconnecting politically for months is increasingly perceived as a nuisance in Nuuk as in Copenhagen. “We cannot accept the repeated statements about the annexation and control of Greenland,” said the executive head of government Múte B. Eggede and the top of the four other Greenlandic parliamentary parties in a joint statement.
According to a survey, a clear majority of the island population is also against becoming a US territory. To underpin this, hundreds of people in Nuuk and other places against the United States recently protested. The unmistakable message “Yankee, Go Home!” to read.
Since a media-effective short visit by President’s son Donald Trump JR. In January, the US government has been trying to create a completely different picture of the largest island on earth: that of a supposed interest in saying goodbye to the Kingdom of Denmark and becoming “part of the greatest nation in the world”, as President Trump put it.
New protests, as announced after the announcement of Usha Vance ‘trip, would not fit into this crooked picture. This knowledge, like the clear dismissal by Greenland politics, should have played a role in this why the travel plans have been changed. The dates by Usha Vance in Nuuk and in a traditional dog sled race in Sisimiut with direct contact with the Greenland population – and the risk of larger demonstrations – were canceled. For you and your husband there is a kind of home game in front of US soldiers at the Pituffik military base.
Escalation or de -escalation?
The visit to the Trump camp in Greenland, which has so far highest rank, remains controversial, but Vance in Pituffik will hardly be able to generate the excitement that Trump Jr. in the middle of the capital Nuuk. The US base, which was called Thule Air Base until two years ago, is located in the secluded northwest of Greenland. It is of great importance for global rocket defense and space surveillance, but is one thing above all: quite far away from the shot.
Does Vance ignite the next escalation level when he visits Greenland? Or is the US government possibly trying to calm down the situation? This remains to be seen until Trump’s fighting dog bites again – or lets it stay this time.
