He had just arrived in New York when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Here Michael Streck tells of cold dust and the time when the world changed.
This article comes from the Stern Archive and was first published on September 10, 2021 on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Exactly a week before the attacks on the World Trade Center we stood on the Empire State Building and looked at the World Trade Center. The sun was just going down, and my wife said to our daughters, then seven and nine: “See the high towers over there? From up there you can look at Delaware on nice days. And we’ll see that next week.” The daughters didn’t really understand at the time. They knew nothing to start with the high towers and certainly nothing with Delaware. We had just arrived. There is still a photo of it. The children on the viewing platform high up over Manhattan, in the background the towers that were no longer seven days later.
