The Baden-Württemberg CDU boss Manuel Hagel wants to become Prime Minister in the southwest. He wanted to compete as a top candidate in the 2026 state election, the 36-year-old announced, according to information from the German Press Agency at a CDU event in Friedrichshafen. The SWR had initially reported about it.

The top candidate is elected at the CDU state party conference on May 17th in Stuttgart. The next state election in Baden-Württemberg is expected to take place on March 8, 2026. The success of Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), who no longer competes after three terms, is decided in the election. Federal Minister Cem Özdemir is running for the Greens.

Good starting position for hail

The CDU in Baden-Württemberg has been in the surveys for many months with a clear lead over its green coalition partner. In the last survey on behalf of the SWR, the Christian Democrats were 33 percent, the Greens came to 22 percent.
