Syria has a new government that is supposed to continue the conversion of the country after the fall of long-term power holders Bashar al-Assad. Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa presented a cabinet consisting of 22 ministers in the evening. After a rebel alliance Assad fell in December, a transitional government initially took over the state business. The new government now wants to rebuild the state institutions based on “responsibility and transparency”, said Scharaa.
A rebel alliance led by Islamist Haiat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS) had taken control in the Syrian capital Damascus on December 8th. The overthrown long -term ruler Assad fled to Russia.
The transitional government was led by the then head of government of the rebel stronghold Idlib, Mohammed al-Bashir. The new government appointed by the Islamist Schaara is also a woman for the first time. Hind Kabawat was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and work. She is a Christian. A prime minister was not appointed. Sharaa is expected to run the work of the cabinet.
