It is Netanyahus’ first trip to Europe since the International Criminal Court (ICC) had imposed an arrest warrant against him last November.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Hungary on Wednesday. Among other things, he would meet his counterpart Viktor Orban there, said the government’s office. It is the first trip to Netanyahus to Europe since the International Criminal Court (ICC) imposed an arrest warrant against him last November due to the procedure in the Gaza War. The return trip is planned on Sunday.
Orban had demonstrated the invitation to Netanyahu demonstratively after issuing the arrest warrant. The decision of the ISCHH overridden international law and “pouring oil into the fire,” said Orban at the time. “That’s why I will still invite Benjamin Netanyahu today, which will not have any consequences for him. We will reject the arrest warrant if he accepts the invitation.”
Orban has long maintained good relationships with Netanyahu. Israel’s head of government thanked him for his support, as Netanyahu’s office announced at the time. Hungary is on the side of justice.
Hungary has ratified the ROM statute as the basis of the Criminal Court and would therefore actually be obliged to enforce its arrest warrants.
