Once again, Donald Trump speaks about a third term as US president. According to the constitution, it is not allowed – but Trump sees “methods” to make them possible.
US President Donald Trump has underpinned his possible ambitions for a third term-although the US constitution only allowed two terms. In a telephone interview with the NBC news station led on Sunday, Trump said to a question: “I’m not joking.” Trump later commented on again.
There are “methods” with which a third term of office could be possible, the president said in the NBC interview. “A lot of people” wanted to make a third term.
When asked about a possible scenario, in which Vice President JD Vance run as president and then cede the office to Trump, the Republican said: “This is one possibility.” He added that “there are others”, but initially gave no further details.
Donald Trump keeps flirting with third term in office
The US President later commented on the question. “We still have almost four years ahead of us, and that’s a long time,” said Trump in front of journalists on board the presidential aircraft Air Force One. Nevertheless, “so many people” said that he had to run again. “They love the work we do,” Trump apparently said with a view to his political allies and supporters.
When asked by a journalist, whether he was planning to not submit his office on January 20, 2029, Trump apparently waved: “I don’t consider that, but I tell you that more people have asked me if I would like to have a third term.”
Trump had already fan publicly with a third term in the past few months. In January he said he did not know whether he was prohibited from a new candidacy for the presidency. The “New York Times” also reported that Trump had already said in front of Congress members in November that he would probably not run again – “unless she tells me: ‘He is so good that we have to find a way'”.
US constitution only allowed two terms
During his presidential election campaign, Trump even said at a meeting of conservative Christians in July that they would have to “no longer vote” if he won the election.
Since the adoption of the 22nd constitutional addition in 1951, it has been planned that “nobody more than two times” may be elected President of the United States. The Republican Congressman Andy Ogles had introduced an initiative to increase the term of office to three periods in January, but no realistic opportunities are granted to her.
