Laschet: Abandon of Russia sanctions would be a wrong signal
As long as the war of Russia against Ukraine has not ended, there is no reason to shower out of the sanction system, says the CDU politician. He could play a role in the new cabinet.
CDU foreign politician Armin Laschet has spoken out against the relaxation of the sanctions against Russia. “It is the completely wrong signal to talk about something like this now,” Laschet told the news portal “Web.de News”. “We have a European sanction system, and we don’t shook from it.”
There is no reason to change something as long as the war has not ended, said Laschet. Previously, Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (also CDU) had asked in the dpa interview that in Germany at least a loosening of the sanctions had to be discussed.
For good contacts with the USA
Laschet advocated continuing to maintain good contacts with the USA and in particular with the Republicans. “Donald Trump is president for the next four years. I don’t think much of making fun of him every day,” said the CDU politician. Trump has to be convinced that the United States also had something of a good relationship with Europe.
Laschet kept covered with his own plans. He is considered one of several candidates for the office of Federal Foreign Minister in the next federal government. It was too early for such discussions, said Laschet. “The top of the three parties are currently in discussion to clarify the dissent points of the working groups,” he said, referring to the coalition negotiations from the CDU, CSU and SPD. The question of who will fill which department decide in the very last hours. In this respect, it is not an issue.
