Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. On Tuesday, the Greens politician visited the so-called contact line on the south-eastern border between Ukraine and Russia. Baerbock was deeply shocked by the situation in the crisis area in eastern Ukraine. “Here, on this contact line, you experience very depressing impressions, with very depressing feelings for me, because right on the beach, actually one of the most beautiful places here in the country, you can feel what happened years ago. That people from one day to the next have lost everything they had. Children’s toys are still lying by the wayside. Houses have been destroyed. Once a holiday resort, now a testament that we are at war in the middle of Europe.” With her visit, the minister wanted to set an example. She firmly believes that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia can only be resolved diplomatically. She stressed the importance of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Observer Mission being able to do its work on the ground. At the same time, progress must be made, especially in the Normandy format, in which Germany and France mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has meanwhile stationed more than 100,000 soldiers on the eastern border of Ukraine. The government in Moscow rejects accusations from the West that it is preparing an invasion. Instead, Russia is demanding security guarantees from the US and NATO, such as a commitment that Ukraine will not join the transatlantic military alliance.
