Retail easing: federal states stop 2G rule – others wait

Numerous countries are relaxing the 2G rule in retail: Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein will follow on Wednesday, followed by Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Saturday. Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia, on the other hand, want to keep them.

In several federal states, the 2G rule expires in retail. From Wednesday, people in Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein will have access to shops without proof that they have been vaccinated or recovered, according to decisions made by the state governments on Tuesday. However, a mask requirement still applies.

Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will follow on Saturday, where corresponding regulations will come into force. In Bremen, too, the 2G rule in retail is to be lifted shortly – but FF2 masks remain mandatory everywhere. In Baden-Württemberg, 2G should only apply in the event of a tense corona situation, which is currently not the case.

Federal states take back 2G partly after court rulings

For Berlin, the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) announced on Tuesday that the 2G rule in retail would expire on February 18. Instead, a general FFP2 mask requirement should also apply there. The decision on this should come next Tuesday. The background is, among other things, that neighboring Brandenburg is also moving away from the regulation, said Giffey. Berlin may have reached the apex of the omicron wave.

In Hesse, customers no longer need proof of vaccination or recovery when shopping since Monday. Previously, several federal states had already withdrawn the 2G rule in retail due to court decisions, such as Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Saarland. Employers’ and trade associations in particular had recently increasingly called for a nationwide end to the regulation.

NRW wants to stay with 2G in retail for the time being

In Saxony-Anhalt, on the other hand, 2G still applies in retail, while 3G largely applies in Thuringia and Saxony. At 3G, only customers who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative are allowed into the stores.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered have access to retail stores. The current regulation will not be changed in this regard, said State Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) in Düsseldorf. From Wednesday there will be no more controls, only random samples.

A trend reversal in the infection process is “currently not to be seen,” emphasized Laumann. After the Prime Minister’s Conference planned for next week, the NRW state government will reassess the infection process.
