Karl Lauterbach (SPD), Federal Minister of Health: “So we cannot advocate broad easing at the moment, as is currently being discussed. I am surprised at the discussion, some of which can now be observed in politics. We are still before that Peak of the wave. Every day we have between 100 and 150 deaths, far too many. We, well, we manage to control the world to some extent with the measures that we have in place. So it should now be a quick one opening, to a rapid withdrawal of essential measures, then we would significantly lengthen the wave. You would then probably not only risk a relapse, but we would then see the wave flatten out quickly, which is what we are basically trying to do now, that we wouldn’t be able to achieve that. Therefore, the discussion we are currently having about openings is, in my view, out of place. Of course, we will open well before Easter but if we open quickly now, we will only prolong the wave and harm ourselves. And that will not really be viewed as a success by the general public either. We currently have a working, successful strategy. Our aim cannot be to endanger them without need. The facility-related vaccination requirement is not a form of harassment against the staff working in these facilities. That’s not what it is about. Rather, it is about protecting the people entrusted to the employees there. It is therefore very problematic for politics as a whole, because it means that the laws apply, but that they do not necessarily have to be implemented by Prime Ministers. This is of course also a message that is difficult to convey. We expect the population to always go along with us if we can give good reasons for it when we present measures. And now it gives the impression that this may not apply to the prime ministers. And I personally think that’s a very dangerous signal. And so I’m not happy with that. And I hope we can find a solution.”
