The senator and former presidential applicant criticized Trump’s radical cuts of the state apparatus with the dismissal of thousands of public service. Booker also accused the right-wing populist to tear more and more power and endanger US democracy. He spoke of a “unconstitutional” approach of Trump.

Over 25 hours: In the US Senate there was the longest speech in history

“In just 71 days, the President of the United States has caused so much damage to the security of the Americans, financial stability, the basics of our democracy.”

According to the rules of the Congress Chamber, a senator may speak as long as he wants – as long as the word is not withdrawn and no special restrictions apply to the debate. He has to stand continuously and may only comment with minimal interruptions.

According to the US media, the speech in the history of the US Senate, which had so far been longest to date, lasted more than one day: In 1957, Senator Strom Thurmond spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes to prevent the civil rights law.

Similar marathon speeches have always existed in the US Senate. Under the name Filibuster, they are known to be able to delay votes beyond laws. Technically speaking, Booker’s current speech was not a filibuster because the Senate has no vote on a legal text.
