SPD boss Esken: Negotiations “still do a lot”

The coalition talks between the SPD and Union are about the small print – among other things with the finances. You still need time, both sides say.

SPD boss Saskia Esken is optimistic about the coalition negotiations with the Union – but does not expect a quick agreement. “I am convinced that we will go into the next week, there is still a lot to do,” said Esken before another round of talks in Berlin.

The conversations would go ahead. “Yes, it is, as I should say, a daily change of change because still very, very different parties are negotiating,” said the social democrat. “And at the same time we feel a great responsibility.” SPD and Union would be significantly closer to all points. “That is really hopeful, not for us, but for the country, for people.”

“Don’t let go of dissent”

Similarly, CSU state group leader Alexander Dobrindt commented on the negotiations on financial issues. “We find movement,” said Dobrindt. “It is crucial for us that savings potential are realized. Suggestions for this, they are then on the table and have to be discussed.”

It is not about building time pressure, but working through the points cleanly. “We don’t want to create a dissent that is unsolved and later causes difficulties.” It takes time to develop mutual understanding.

Talks in the big round

Before that, there had been conjectures that the possible coalition partners could be reached in central points this week. Today the main negotiating group is to speak. It includes 19 leading representatives of the three parties, in addition to Dobrindt, Esken and the SPD Co chairman Lars Klingbeil, these are also CDU boss Friedrich Merz and CSU boss Markus Söder.
