Since the beginning of the Gaza War, the departure from the coastal strip blocked for almost two decades has become even more difficult. Now 19 Germans with relatives have been flown out.
The federal government has made 19 German citizens and their closest relatives possible to leave the competitive Gaza Strip. A total of 33 people were, a spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin said.
Accordingly, they were brought to an airport in southern Israel in close coordination with the Israeli authorities via the Kerem Schalom border crossing, from where it went directly to Leipzig.
The departure from the Gaza Strip, which has been blocked for almost two decades, in which around two million people live, has become even more difficult since the beginning of the war a year and a half ago. If at all, it is only possible through a protracted procedure in which Palestinians with foreign citizenship have slightly better cards.
Other German citizens in the Gaza Strip
According to the Federal Foreign Office, there is still a “low double -digit number” of German citizens in the sealed coastal area. The spokeswoman said that they also want to allow them to leave. But that is not a thing that succeeds “overnight”.
In the course of the war, which started with the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, large parts of the Gaza Strip were devastated. The living conditions for the civilian population are unbearable.
