There is an international arrest warrant against Benjamin Netanyahu. But it seems that nobody is taking it really seriously – not even Germany.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not expect that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested in a visit to Germany despite an international arrest warrant. “I cannot imagine that there is an arrest,” said the SPD politician in Berlin on Thursday to a question.
Against Netanyahu there is an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The members of the Criminal Court would have to have it arrested if Netanyahu enters the corresponding territory. Israel rejects the allegations and describes them as politically motivated and anti -Semitic.
Scholz ‘successor Merz would not have Netanyahu arrested
The controversial Israeli head of government is visiting the EU country Hungary. His right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban had assured Netanyahu that he would not consider the arrest warrant because of the Israeli procedure in the Gaza War. The chief of staff of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Gergely Gulyas, announced on Thursday, according to the official news agency MTI, that the EU country would escape from the ICC.
In Germany, CDU boss Friedrich Merz had also announced that Netanyahu did not have to expect arrest in the event of a visit to Germany.
