AfD enforces continuously in the district with CDU – at least theoretically
In Jerichower Land, the Germany flag must blow in front of public buildings-this has enforced AfD and CDU. Nevertheless, black-red-gold should hardly be seen.
In the district of Jerichower Land in Saxony-Anhalt, black-red-gold will soon be more present in public than before. The district council has decided that the Germany flag is to be hoisted in front of all public buildings that have a flag mast – all year round. The AfD had submitted the corresponding application, and the CDU parliamentary group also voted for it.
In its application, the AfD argued that it was important to find “a smallest common denominator” in a time of economic, social, political and religious differences. As this, the AfD in Jerichower Land identified “belonging to its own nation”. This would be strengthened by a permanent flag, the group leader Gordon Köhler claims in the application under the title “Show flag”.

An opinion that the Christian Democrats apparently can join the district council. The decision was also taken with their voices. The AfD won the district election in 2024 with almost 29 percent and has eleven seats in the committee. According to the state constitutional protection, the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt is considered secure right-wing extremists.
The decision is binding for all buildings that are in public hands – including 15 schools in the district. Elementary schools are excluded because they are carried by the cities and municipalities themselves. So far, service buildings had only had to be flagged on certain holidays and commemorative days as well as elections.
How much black and red gold will really be seen in the Jerichower Land in the future is open. A list of the local portal “Meetingpoint JL” shows that according to information from the district, 23 buildings would theoretically be affected by the arrangement. However, this initially only explicitly applies only to buildings with an existing flag mast. And so far there are only six of them in the Jerichower Land. From this point of view, the decision of AfD and CDU seems more like symbol policy, which is unlikely to be reflected in the cityscape.
