At a press conference, Robert Habeck shows documents that are supposed to contain EU countermeasures for Trump’s radical customs policy. “Top Secret” or hot air?
With an unusual campaign, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck ensured speculation at a press conference for the new US customs package.
During his speech, in which he announced determined countermeasures from the EU, Habeck held up a bundle of papers and said: “These are the countermeasures, printed on the back. He brought the documents with him, but he should not show them – so he only keeps them up for a short time, the minister said in front of the cameras. He wants to show “what it looks like”.
The possible reactions of the EU Commission to the US tariffs are currently being discussed confidentially. The background is hope for a negotiating solution with the USA. In addition, no measures have been officially decided.
Habeck photos coincide with a public document
According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, however, the documents shown were not secret papers to a future response from the EU on the tariffs now imposed by US President Donald Trump. Instead, Habeck held up a list that has been open to the public since March. It contains US products that the EU wants to collect punitive tariffs from mid-April-in response to US tariffs to steel and aluminum, which Trump had already issued in February.
In photos of the documents in Habeck’s hands, three sides can be seen that coincide with the publicly accessible EU paper.
