In order to effectively contain the growing risk of war, Germany and many of its European neighbors have to quickly close their gaps in the defense. This is not possible without arms imports from the USA, says security expert Christian Mölling from the Brussels Think Tank Tank European Policy Center. Especially with fighter planes, rockets and military electronics, Europe remains dependent on US technology for the foreseeable future. “If we want to quickly become defensive, we have no alternative,” said Mölling. There is a deadline “up to which we should be finished so that we can lower the risk of war”. The run 2029.
Ukraine, according to the expert, could also help in certain areas to make Germany in a short notice. “Ukraine currently has production capacities that are not busy. If you provide the money for it, it can not only produce for itself, but also for Europe,” says Mölling. German armaments companies are currently also adopting to expand cooperation with Ukraine. The decisive factor is two reasons: purchasing power effect and production speed.
Risk of war: the negotiations are only a show for Putin.
“One euro is worth five to six euros in Ukraine. That means they get more for the money there, even more workforce,” said Mölling. In addition, the Ukrainians delivered quickly. The quality of armored vehicles made in Ukraine now also gives an impression of German manufacturers. Their quality is not far from the German standard. “When it comes to that we should be finished by 2029, it may be acceptable,” says Mölling. Especially when Ukrainian manufacturers are able to quickly deliver large quantities.
According to Mölling, the current discussions between representatives of the Trump government and the Russian special envoy Kirill Dimitriev are “a bad sign” for Ukraine. Russia has “actually changed nothing” in his behavior since Donald Trump’s took office as US President. The Russian President only adjusted his “script” for the war against Ukraine: “We make a big show and pretend that we are negotiating. But in reality we continue to fight.”
