Donald Trump has put himself in his head to own Greenland. The government there defends itself. Nevertheless, the White House checks whether the island could afford it.
Donald Trump absolutely wants to own Greenland – it costs what it wants. In the meantime, the US President even underpinned his ownership claims with military threats.
In the White House, one is currently trying to estimate how much it would cost to control the Greenland territory, and relies on three people familiar with the matter. It is probably the most concrete attempt to implement Trump’s wish to acquire the island politically. Accordingly, the costs for the maintenance of the island and the potential income that the United States would attract by reducing natural raw materials were included.
Officially, Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, but has a largely autonomous status. 58,000 people live there. In the past few months, the US President had repeatedly declared that he wanted to take control of the largest island in the world and justified the demand either with national or international security. The global community reacted outraged. Greenland’s newly elected head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, rejected Trump’s claims.
Trump does not exclude military measures for Greenland’s takeover
However, the US government is sure that Greenland does not mean that. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized when visiting Brussels that they respect the right to self-determination, but it was clear that the island does not want to be the Danes, and the kingdom should be prepared for it. He was confident that the Greenlanders would make a decision. “And if you make this decision, the United States might be willing to step in and say: Okay, we can build a partnership with you,” said Rubio.
Trump repeated only on Saturday that the USA would get Greenland – “100 percent”. When asked whether this would happen with or without violence, Trump said that it would be possible without military interventions. But he does not want to rule out an option. “The President believes that Greenland is a strategically important location and is convinced that the Green countries would be better served if they were protected from modern threats in the Arctic,” a spokeswoman for the White House told the Washington Post.
Now the US officials are working on plans for the takeover. The cost analysis is based on the assumption that the Greenlanders support the takeover, it said from Washington. According to the newspaper report, there is an option to outdo the Danes with an offer to the Greenland government. Denmark subsidizes services on the island with around $ 600 million a year. The United States would be ready to pay more, the “Washington Post” quotes an official from the White House.
That, estimates the price of the Greenland base treasures at $ 200 billion. She put the strategic value of the island at three trillion dollars.
At the beginning of his second term, Donald Trump had announced that he would also want to take over Canada and the Panama Canal. The acquisition of Greenland is considered the simplest in the White House.
Trump wants to sell his plans well to the Greenlanders
To the outside world, the US government is optimistic that the Greenlanders want to break away from Denmark. However, an official of the White House told the Washington Post that it is currently advising on how to make the takeover by the USA tasty to the islanders.
Trump’s Vice, JD Vance, had recently visited Greenland and was staged there as a salvation bringer for the islanders. “Our message to Denmark is very simple. You have not done a good job for the people in Greenland. You have invested too little in the people of Greenland, and you have invested too little in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful land mass with incredible people,” he complained. The United States could not accept that Russia or China penetrate in Greenland. Following Trump’s logic, he also justified the takeover with security guarantees against the competitors from the east.
The US government repeatedly emphasizes that Greenland would be a profit for the United States because of its soil treasures and its geographical situation. Among other things, the island is rich in petroleum and rare earths and is due to a decisive bottleneck between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean – near sea paths that are advantageous for shipping and military traffic.
However, it is controversial that the economic benefits are really as great as emphasized by the Trump administration again and again. The breakdown of the raw materials is considered expensive, complex and not particularly productive. In addition, the conditions under which the minerals would have to be encouraged are extreme. Critics therefore see Trump’s justification primarily as a guise for his expansion fantasies.
