Greens party conference: combative start to the opposition

The Greens have to reinvent themselves as an opposition party. It becomes clear at the small party congress: migration remains a topic of conflict. And only one is satisfied with the election campaign.

After a disappointing Bundestag election result, the Greens rely on the Union. “Above all, we were too nice from my point of view,” said parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge in retrospect – when it comes to climate protection, her party was always on the defensive.

Baerbock: have to say who we want to deport

Drawn demanded from the Union to formulate a stop line in asylum policy. Border closures are not the answer. When dealing with migration, opinions differed – as so often. Svenja Borgschulte, the chair of a green internal working group on the subject, accused her party of not having done enough against the right of the right. This should have been more courageous and clear when defending human rights, she demanded.

The executive Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock held against it. In its state of Brandenburg, the discourse shifted to the right, by the AfD, but also by the CDU and SPD. She was asked there why the Greens let all of the Islamists into the country.

“We won’t get any further when we say we need a more humane refugee policy,” said Baerbock to her party. This must also say who she wanted to deport, “namely serious criminals and those who take our fundamental rights with feet”.

The delegated Leonie Wingerath from Berlin replied Baerbock: “In my view, deportations must never become a substitute criminal law.” At the time when party leader Franziska Brantner had not excluded a coalition with the Union even when she voted in the Bundestag with the AfD, she said: “At that moment I was more close to the party exit.”

Habeck with himself – and misses mature citizens

Opinions also differ in the election campaign analysis. Despite a disappointing election result of 11.6 percent, Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck is still satisfied with himself. “Others would probably have more reason to ask themselves what went wrong in their election campaign.”

His party and he have never been as much as in the last few weeks of the election campaign, said Habeck. During this time, however, there had been internal criticism of him, among other things because of hard tones on the subject of migration.

Habeck described his own election campaign as honest. Others returned problems under the carpet and promise simple sham solutions. It is important to pronounce unpleasant truths. However, this requires mature citizens who rewarded this approach. As on the day after the election, Habeck was enough for the poor performance of the Greens in the Bundestag election to the majority of the voters.

“We never want to be like Friedrich Merz”

The chairman of the Green Youth Jakob Blasel asked for a stronger focus on everyday problems: the nine-euro ticket, a rental cover, adequate wages and redistribution, he listed as part of the answer. “Young people collectively withdrawn from us in the federal election,” said his bitter conclusion. His co-chair Jette Nietzard turned against a fight for voices with the left. “The enemy is on the right of the middle.”

Habeck’s campaign manager Andreas Audretch attacked CDU boss Friedrich Merz. The AfD provides the AfD with statements against wind turbines or for more sanctions for citizens’ gates that use them for themselves. “With all clarity, we have to get the counter -discourse on our feet,” he said. “We never want to be like Friedrich Merz.”

The Greens want to fight – also in the east

Party leader Brantner, who met Merz’s word fractions, came into the same horn, a flirt with the AfD, falsehoods in debt brake and sham solutions in migration. She warned of the rise of populism. Democracies could tip over if nobody fights for them anymore. She promised her party friends: “You will see us fighting and we will fight together.”

In East Germany, where they perform badly in elections, the Greens want to show more presence in the future. A committee of Greens from the East German federal states should regularly advise the board, an “East Congress” is intended to ensure more networking.

The delegates also said goodbye to Baerbock and Habeck, who, after forming years, first withdraw as party leader and then as a minister of leadership roles in the party. “Whenever you come back, you are very welcome,” said party leader Brantner both.
