German climate activist has to leave Austria – and refuses

Anja Windl, also known as nickname “Klima-Shakira”, is considered the central figure of the climate protest in Austria. But then she should go away. You stay one last time.

Austria has given the German climate activist Anja Windl a two-year ban on stay. From the perspective of the authorities, the 28-year-old student who lives in Klagenfurt is “a significant risk to public order and security”, as the German Press Agency (dpa) is called in the 40-page letter from the Federal Office for Foreign and Asylum (BFA).

The BFA justifies its decision with the climate protests of Windl. Her recent actions against the party headquarters of the conservative ÖVP have proven its “massive troublemaker”, which goes well beyond climate actions.

Windl, also known as her nickname “Klima-Shakira”, protested in January against the admission of coalition talks between conservative ÖVP and right FPÖ. She wrote to the outer wall of the ÖVP party center: “You stink of a brown shit”.

Last generation resigned: “Society has to take over now”

The activist from the Straubing area wants to file a complaint with the Federal Administrative Court within the four -week period. “I don’t be impressed,” she told the German Press Agency. “Peaceful protest is necessary in times of burgeoning fascism and a burning world.”

Anja Windl has many procedures and several weeks of compensation in the neck

Windl had participated in seat blocks and other climate protection protests. Despite requesting the police, she had not left the demonstrations. According to the BFA, the student was arrested more than ten times due to administrative violations of the meeting law and the road traffic regulations.

Since she was unable to pay the high fines, Windl, according to its own statements, served a total of nine weeks in 2024 and 2025 to compensation. Thanks to donations, she has been able to avert further replacement so far, said the psychology student, who has lived in Austria since 2017.

Her lawyer reacted to the official step with incomprehension. Windl has never been convicted in Austria, said lawyer Ralf Niederhammer of the dpa. Criminal investigations against Windl and other members of the former group of the last generation would still run, among other things for suspicion of the criminal association and property damage.

Authority: Windl left -wing extremist motivated

Windl underlined her “left -wing extremist motivated attitude” by the fact that she had claimed to feed documents of Austrian authorities and courts to farm animals, the BFA continued. In addition, she had divided a short video that showed a cake throw on the former German finance minister Christian Lindner (FDP).
