“More than 2.1 million people are locked up again, are bombarded and starved”: Leading UN representatives call for immediate international intervention in view of the situation in Gaza.
Several UN organizations call for the international community in view of the dramatically tightened humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip for immediate action. For over a month, no commercial or humanitarian deliveries have been in the area because of the Israeli blockade, according to a joint explanation of the bosses of six agencies of the United Nations, including the World Nutrition Program, the Children’s Aid Service Unicef and the World Health Organization.
“More than 2.1 million people are locked up again, are bombarded and starved, while food, medication, fuel and relief goods are stacked at the transitions,” warned the signatories. The organizations referred to figures according to which over 1,000 children were killed or injured in the first week after the collapse of the recent fire break – the highest number within a week since the beginning of the conflict.
The healthcare system in the Gaza Strip is only partially functional and is about to collapse. Vital medical and surgical aids would become scarce, which is difficult to intend to make progress. “We are witnessing war acts in Gaza who show a complete disregard for human life,” it said. Hundreds of thousands of people would have forced new Israeli evacuation orders to flee again – there is no longer a safe place.
