The US President apparently ties in with a controversial project of his first term. Could tanks actually roll through the capital this time – as a kind of birthday present?
According to media reports, the US government under President Donald Trump plans a large military parade through the capital Washington-on Trump’s 79th birthday on June 14th. The day accidentally coincides with the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the US Army. However, official applications or detailed votes are still pending.
In the “The Hill” portal, it was said, citing a high -ranking government representative, that plans for the parade are currently running, which should lead almost four miles (around 6.4 kilometers) from Pentagon in Arlington in the state of Virginia to the White House. First, the weekly newspaper “Washington City Paper” reported on the project.
Mayor: “Sounds like a military parade”
When asked by a journalist, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that the city had been contacted by the Trump government in connection with a planned parade. However, she does not know whether this was a military parade. When the journalist noted that the parade on the Pentagon should start, Bowser replied: “Okay, then it actually sounds like a military parade.”
According to “The Hill”, an army representative confirmed the route length – but emphasized that the plans had not yet been finally decided.
No new project – but an expensive one
Already during his first term (2017-2021) Trump had sought a military parade based on the French model, but rejected the project again due to an estimated cost of around $ 92 million (around 84 million euros).
At that time, local authorities such as the city of Washington and the Ministry of Defense also expressed concerns – among other things because of possible damage to streets by heavy armored vehicles. The magazine “Newsweek” quotes the former air force general Michael Hayden from this time with the words: “This is simply not our style. (…) If you know how powerful you are, you don’t have to play it.”
When asked about possible street damage, Mayor Bowser again emphasized that the streets of the capital were not designed for tanks. “If they were actually used, this would have to go hand in hand with many millions in order to repair the streets afterwards,” she said.
