UN: Israel closes further unknown schools in East Jerusalem

A work ban imposed by Israel has been imposed on the UN Palestinian aid since the end of January. Now Israel is going on against Unrwa schools again.

According to the UN, Israel wants to close another six schools of the UN Palestinian aid plant Unrwa in the Arabic eastern part of Jerusalem. Police and employees of the Jerusalem city administration had entered the schools by force, wrote Unrwa boss Philippe Lazzarini on the platform X. They had closings within 30 days. On request, Israel’s police did not comment on the incident.

“Around 800 boys and girls are directly affected by these closure orders and will probably not be able to end their school year,” said Lazzarini.

Israel accuses the UN Palestinian aid work that employees were involved in terrorist activities of the Islamist Hamas. As a consequence, Israel’s parliament imposed a ban on work on Israeli territory that came into force at the end of January. Another law prohibits Israeli authorities of contact with Unrwa. According to media reports, a freelance Israeli hostage had told that it had been captured in the Gaza Strip in a unrewa facility.

Israel had previously had closures from several unknown schools in East Jerusalem. The Jerusalem city administration had announced that it would take care of the students concerned after the Unrwa work ban.
