Court: Israel’s secret service officer remains in office for the time being
The Israeli leadership wants to get rid of intelligence chief Ronen Bar. Critics see this a conflict of interest. The country’s highest court has now dealt with the case.
Israel’s Colonel Court does not allow the right -religious government to be dismissed by the domestic secret service manager Ronen Bar for the time being. The judges discovered an injunction, according to which the Schin-Bet boss must remain in office and may not be restricted his powers until there is a final decision in the case. The government must therefore not appoint a successor to Bar. However, the court again determined that successor candidates may be interviewed.
The judges also suggested that the Israeli government and the Attorney General should achieve a compromise in the legal dispute and initially gave both sides until April 20. If you do not reach an agreement, the court will decide.
Israel’s government had decided on the highly controversial dismissal of the domestic secret service manager in March. The court had suspended the decision shortly afterwards with an injunction. This was initially valid until excitedly expected advice from the court on Tuesday.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of a “enigmatic” decision. The judges had the authority of the government to deduct the Schin-Bet boss several times during the hearing. The statement did not show whether the government fits the decision. Otherwise, a constitutional crisis would threaten. Some ministers see the court as not authorized to intervene in the government decision.
Netanyahu had justified the dismissal of Bars with a “lack of trust” in the secret service chief. However, critics accuse Netanyahu of being in a conflict of interest. Bars release triggered mass protests.
The Schin Bet investigates, among other things, against confidante Netanyahus for possible illegal relationships with the Arabian Gulf State of Qatar.
