Six ministerial posts for the CDU, seven for the SPD and three for the CSU. This is how the ministries are distributed in the new federal government. The line -up is still speculated.

With the coalition agreement, the Union and SPD have also agreed on the distribution of the ministries. The CDU has been given the Federal Foreign Office for the first time in almost 60 years, the SPD occupies the important ministries for finance and defense. And in the future, a minister of the CSU will take care of internal security. However, speculating on the names of the cabinet members. You will only be announced later.

How many ministries will there be in the future?

The Union and SPD actually want to write down the reduction in bureaucracy. When drawing up the cabinet, however, you fail because of your own claim. In the future there will be a ministry more than before. In the future, 18 men and women will belong to the cabinet instead of 17 at the time of the traffic light coalition.

With party leader Friedrich Merz, the CDU provides the Federal Chancellor and a chancellor’s head of the Federal Minister. In addition, the largest government party gets six ministries, a total of eight posts. The SPD will occupy seven ministries, the CSU three.

Is that fair with a view to the election result?

The CDU received 22.6 percent of the votes in the federal election, the SPD 16.4 and the CSU 6.0. If you take this to the benchmark, the CDU would be entitled to 9.0 from the 18 posts in the cabinet, the SPD 6.6 and the CSU 2.4. This means that the SPD and CSU will get away a little better in the distribution that has now been decided. The CDU is worse.

Are there any new ministries and fall which way?

Union and SPD have agreed on a new Ministry of Digitization and State Modernization, which is occupied by the CDU. The ministries for development and construction, the existence of which was questioned by the Union, remain and in the hands of the SPD. Climate protection is moving from the Economic Ministry (SPD). The Ministry of Education and Research becomes a Ministry of “Research, Technology and Space” (CSU). Education is integrated into the Family Ministry (CDU).

How are the big ministries distributed?

The SPD gets the important houses finance and defense. The CDU takes over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the CSU, for the first time in almost 60 years.

The CDU also receives the Ministeries for Health and Transport. The SPD keeps work and social issues and receives the Ministry of Justice. The CSU will fill the Ministry of Agriculture.

Who will be Vice Chancellor?

That is not yet clear. It is very likely that SPD party and parliamentary group leader Lars Klingbeil changes to the cabinet- then probably as finance minister and Vice Chancellor. Should he decide against it, the previous Defense Minister Boris Pistorius could become Friedrich Merz. It is certain that Pistorius will keep his ministry.

Are there any other names of the ministers?

They will only be announced later by the three parties. But there has been a lot of speculation for weeks. When it comes to the occupation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two candidates are primarily called, a favorite is not recognizable. Ex-NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet, as Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and former European Parliamentarians, is considered to be very well networked. He also has good contacts with France and the Middle East. However, the faction vice -President Johann WadePhul, responsible for outside and defense, is also given good chances of the ministerial office.

Who else is in the race from the CDU for the cabinet?

Secretary General Carsten Linnemann is considered as good as set for the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Parliamentary Managing Director of the Union Group, Thorsten Frei, could also switch to the government. Among other things, he is in discussion as head of the chancellor. But a ministerial office or the chair of the Union faction are also trusted.

The Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education Karin Prien could become Minister of Education and Family. Other candidates for cabinet posts are ex-health minister Jens Spahn, the climate and energy expert Andreas Jung and the deputy CDU chairwoman Silvia Breher.

Who makes it from the CSU into the cabinet?

The most powerful CSU politician on the Berlin parquet is by far the state group leader Alexander Dobrindt. Expectations in his own party are correspondingly great that he as the interior minister will switch to the cabinet. Whether Dobrindt, after his time as Minister of Transport from 2013 to 2017, now wants to become a minister again, he will be able to decide freely in the end.

The best chance of a cabinet post is also attributed to the former Digital Minister of State in the Chancellery, Dorothee Bär, which the Ministry of Research could take over. It is still open whether Bavaria’s Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber moves to Berlin and takes over the agricultural die or someone from the national group in the Bundestag.

Which of the previous SPD ministers will remain in the cabinet?

Pistorius is set. Klingbeil can choose. Both are men from Lower Saxony, of whom there are quite a few in the SPD leadership. It is therefore questionable whether there is still room for the previous Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil, also from Lower Saxony. Nobody and finance minister Jörg Kukies are hardly given any chances of staying in the cabinet for the previous Chancellor’s office chief Wolfgang Schmidt. The Ministry of Karl Lauterbach (Health) goes to the CDU. Its departure is therefore likely. However, Svenja Schulze could remain in development minister and Klara Geywitz Minister of Construction.

Will there also be new SPD faces in the cabinet?

It will be sure. SPD boss Klingbeil has announced a generation change in his party, which should also be reflected in the occupation of the cabinet posts. For example, the Brandenburg member of the Bundestag Sonja Eichwede is under discussion for the Ministry of Justice. But the previous Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser was still traded. It is unclear whether the much -criticized party leader Saskia Esken will still be entitled to a cabinet post. So far she has not commented on this.

Who else can be considered?

The previous President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas. She is traded as party leader and parliamentary group leader, but also for a cabinet post. For example, BAS could replace Heil as Minister of Labor. Incidentally, the SPD should no longer pay attention to men than women to send women to the cabinet. That would mean seven posts: four women and three men.
