An end of the war in Ukraine is not foreseeable despite the pressure from US President Trump. Germany is planning more military support. However, great uncertainties remain – because of the United States.

Germany and several other countries have agreed to the Defense campaign against Russia for the defense fight against Russia. The executive Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced, among other things, the short-term delivery of Aircraft missile systems of the Iris-T as well as combat tanks, artillery systems and educational drones at a meeting of the so-called Ramstein group in Brussels.

According to him, he is also working on medium and long-term commitments. It is about more than 1,100 radar systems for soil monitoring and other Iris-T systems. The British Defense Minister John Healey confirmed that the group from around 50 nations had agreed on further aid worth a total of 21 billion euros. Pistorius spoke of “big progress”.

“Crystal ball”: great uncertainty in US aids

However, it is extremely unclear whether the commitments will be enough to enable Ukraine an effective continuation of the fight against Russia. The reason is the course of US President Donald Trump, who has so far not announced any new arms deliveries to Ukraine and instead wants to urge Kiev and Moscow in negotiations on an armistice. US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth had not traveled to Brussels for the meeting of the Ukraine allies, but was only on video.

“In the near future (…) we will see what happens to US support,” said Pistorius. “I’m not able to look into the crystal ball. We are waiting.” Europe assumes more responsibility, including within NATO. The meeting “impressively” showed what the partners are able to do, regardless of whether a minister was physically present or not. The so -called Ramstein Group was originally initiated and managed by the United States – after Trump’s change of course, Germany and Great Britain took the lead.

“Critical” year of war for Ukraine

Russia continues his attacks on Ukraine with undiminished intensity, said Pistorius. Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to accept the death of civilians and children – as recently in the attacks on the Ukrainian industrial city of Krywyj Rih. In 2025, Healey described the “critical year” for the outcome of the war.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow, who also traveled, said that he was grateful to the German people and the German government for the new announcements. The meeting showed that Europe took the lead for Ukraine aid, said Umjerow, who emphasized the urgent need for other Patriot Aircraft Systems. Germany can currently not deliver any more, but said Pistorius.

Most recently, it was said in military circles that Ukraine should be in great military difficulties at the latest at the latest when other partners do not do significantly.

British want to deliver “hundreds of thousands of drones”

In addition to Germany, Great Britain also presented further details of the support at the meeting. A package worth more than 500 million euros co -financed by Norway is intended to enable the delivery of radar systems, tank defense mines and “hundreds of thousands of drones”.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the German package for 2025 includes specifically:

• 4 IRIS-T-ACTIME DEFITION Systems with 300 steering aircraft • 300 reconnaissance drones • 120 portable anti-aircraft missile system (manpads) • 25 rifle tanks marten • 15 fighter tanks Leopard 1A5 • 14 artillery systems • 100 floor monitoring radars • 30 steering aircraft for the Patriot system. According to EU circles, Germany even target the delivery of a total of 500,000 shots.

For further military support, Germany also provides more than eleven billion euros for the coming years until 2029, Pistorius said with a view to the youngest Berlin decisions. “The Ukrainians can rely on us,” he said.

Pistorius is silent about possible plans for troop use

Pistorius was surprised by reports that are said to be unreliable about reports that are provided by Germany on the battlefield. “I took note of these reports,” he said. One is in regular exchange with the Ukrainian partners and he is not aware of complaints about the German material. “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, NDR and WDR had reported on an internal lecture in front of German soldiers that some of the weapons systems delivered are said to have proven to have proven themselves only to be restricted to a limited extent.

The Ukrainian ambassador in Germany, Oleksii Makeieev, told the Editorial Network Germany (RND): “German weapons are among the best we have.” They would have proven themselves very well. Of course, under war conditions, there are indications of what it should be changed and what should be changed about a weapon. That is not a scandal.

Pistorius did not want to comment on whether Germany could make soldiers for an operation in Ukraine or at the border of the country after a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. “We are involved in the plans and considerations, but I will stay with my position (…) of strategic ambiguity,” he said with regard to the work on security guarantees of the “coalition of the willing” led by France and Great Britain. He thinks it is wiser not to talk about every day “what who could do and when, under what circumstances”.
