Two processes in one day were on the schedule for the detained opposition politician Imamoglu. None of the procedures have ended – the risk of a policy ban remains.
Further trial days have been scheduled for two ongoing court proceedings against the detained and dismissed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. This was confirmed by Imamoglus lawyer Kemal Polat after two process dates on Friday of the German Press Agency. In both cases, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s prison terms and a political ban. In terms of content, the procedures have nothing to do with the recent arrest Imamoglus for corruption and terrorist allegations.
The opposition and critics accuse the government of wanting the Erdogan rival to do cold stations through the processes against him. “I am here because I won the elections in Istanbul three times,” IMAMoglu said in court in Silivri west of Istanbul, as the newspaper “Cumhuriyet” reported.
A process began there in which Imamoglu is accused of threatening a public prosecutor. The politician rejected the allegations: “I’m always someone who reconciled,” he said. In this case, a prison sentence of up to seven years and four months as well as a political ban. Another trial day was scheduled for June 16.
Procedure for allegations of fraud continues to extend
The second procedure deals with allegations for tenders in 2015 when Imamoglu was district mayor in the Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul. A decision was not made in this already running process on Friday afternoon. Another trial day was scheduled for July 11, as Imamoglus lawyer said. The latter accused the indictment of delaying a judgment because it amounts to acquittal. Imamoglu did not personally take part in the negotiation here.
In a third trial of his opposition party Chp, Imamoglu is invited as a witness, but was not on site at a court appointment on Friday.
Imamoglu was already sentenced to a political ban in another procedure for insulting civil servants in 2022. The decision has not yet been final.
On March 19, Imamoglu was arrested for terrorist and corruption allegations. Imamoglus arrest triggered the greatest domestic crisis in Turkey for many years. Hundreds of thousands took the street against the government.
