Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov addressed his colleagues with congratulations on the occasion of the Diplomatic Worker’s Day, which is celebrated on Thursday, February 10.
“Today we celebrate the Day of the Diplomatic Worker. First of all, I would like to sincerely congratulate everyone on our common holiday, no matter where you work: in foreign institutions, representative offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the regions or in the Central Office“, Lavrov said.
He stressed the devotion of the diplomats to the common cause and recalled the feat of the employees of the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs who fought during the Great Patriotic War.
Lavrov described the modern diplomatic service as the vanguard of efforts to promote and protect Russian interests in the international arena and create favorable external conditions that improve the quality and standard of living of Russian citizens.
“And of course, how successful and effective our work is, a lot depends on a strong, reliable “rear”. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank your relatives and friends who share with you all the difficulties and sometimes the most ordinary everyday inconveniences of our profession, including long business trips abroad in countries with a difficult military-political situation and difficult climatic conditions,” the Russian minister concluded.
The Day of the Diplomatic Worker, which is celebrated on February 10, was established by the Decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 31, 2002. The date of the professional holiday of Russian diplomats was not chosen by chance – on February 10, 1549, the first foreign policy department of Russia, the Posolsky Prikaz, was mentioned. Its leader was the clerk Ivan Mikhailovich Viskovatov (Viskovaty). Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible instructed him to deal with the “Polish cause”, but Viskovaty did not succeed in fulfilling the royal order and soon Andrei Vasilyev replaced him.
In 1718-1720, the Ambassadorial Order was transformed into the Collegium of Foreign Affairs, and in 1802, Emperor Alexander I formed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which became the forerunner of the modern Russian Foreign Ministry.
