In Hungary, non -binary and transident people have hard times: the parliament changed the constitution that only two genders will be accepted in the future.
Hungary’s parliament has anchored in the state’s constitution that a person can only be defined as a man or woman. Accordingly, non-binary people should not be recognized as such. The People’s Representation also decided to change a constitution that, in the opinion of critics, supports the previously decided ban on Pride parades. In parades, people demonstrate for the rights of gays, bisexual, transident and queer people (LGBTQ).
140 parliamentarians voted for and 21 against the amendments that the government camp led by right -wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had brought in. The two -thirds majority necessary for constitutional changes came about as expected.
During the vote, trumpet sounds of opponents of constitutional changes sounded in the plenary hall in the plenary hall. In front of the parliament building, numerous supporters of the opposition demonstrated after calling the small party Momentum.
Criticism of restriction of freedom of assembly
Already on March 18, Hungary had banned the previously annual pride parades in the urgent procedure. The government had justified the Pride ban, especially with a desired “protection” of children from contact with the topic of homosexuality.
The constitutional change now decided states that the protection of the “mental and moral development” of children receives the status of a fundamental right that has priority over all other fundamental rights, with the exception of law on life.
This means that the right to freedom of assembly has been downgraded, according to the critics of the measure. Many demonstrators chanted: “Freedom of assembly is fundamental right”.
Hungary: Already 15th amendment to the constitution of 2011
It is the 15th amendment of the Hungarian constitution newly introduced according to Orban’s performances in 2011, the preamble of which bears the title “National Creed”. Since December 2020, this constitution also states that a mother can only be a woman and a father. Since 2020, a law has also been in effect in Hungary that makes it impossible to officially change their gender.
