The tensions between France and Algeria have been ongoing for a long time – now there are diplomats. Macron also ordered the ambassador to Paris.
In response to the designation of French embassy members from Algeria, Paris showed twelve Algerian diplomats. In addition, President Emmanuel Macron recalled the French ambassador in Algeria for consultations, said the Élysée Palace in Paris.
The diplomatic dispute has been the preliminary highlight for a long time between the North African country and the former colonial power of France. The background to the current discussion is the arrest of three Algerians in France, including a consulate employee. About a year ago, they are said to have temporarily abducted a government -critical Algerian influencer in France.
France is dismayed
“With dismay, France takes note of the decision of the Algerian authorities to show twelve diplomatic representatives who do service at our message in Algiers,” said the Élysée-Palast. The decision is unjustified and incomprehensible. Algeria had justified it with the arrest of the consulate employee.
France now has twelve Algerian consular and diplomatic employees, it said from the Élysée. “The Algerian authorities take responsibility for brutal deterioration in our bilateral relationships.” According to the Paris Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is a one -time process since the independence of the North African country in 1962.
