Donald Trump is fighting Harvard and other elite universities in the United States-even against his own Alma Mater. But a university defends itself. What else is important.
Good morning, dear readers,
Media? “Fake News”. Political opposition? “Enemies from the inside”. Independent judges? “Radical crazy”, “disturbed” and “unfair”. The US President takes on one institution after the other. First Donald Trump discredited, then he pulls through. He already ignored numerous judgments. Now he is buttoned up the universities.
“Trump’s approach is from the textbook for autocrats,” says Nancy Gertner ““. She is a lecturer at the Harvard Law School and retired judge. Her employer is the first university to not accept the measures of the Trump government and position herself publicly.
Harvard President Alan Garber wrote in a letter: “No government- regardless of which party is in power- should prescribe what private universities can teach, who they can allow and hire and what study and research areas they can pursue”. Such demands were received by the university, summarized in ten points. Government employees also asked to put the political views of students and teachers to the test and to forward admission data to the government.
The government threatens at least seven universities, if they ignore the measures, the “ together. These include elite universities such as Columbia, Cornell or Princeton. Even in front of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump’s own Alma Mater, he doesn’t stop. The educational institutions are about billions, so it quickly becomes existential. To show that he is serious about Garber’s letter to Fror Trump several years of grants of $ 2.2 billion (1.9 billion euros).
Barack Obama sees Harvard as a positive example
Universities like Harvard are now fighting for their freedom, not just for the academic. What measures could the President appease? Or lead individual steps to a safe without a floor?
The university receives support from a prominent alumnus. The A positive example for other universities, “by rejecting an illegal and awkward attempt to suppress academic freedom”.
He hoped that other institutions followed. We stay for you.
Have a nice day and warm greetings
The ex-president speaks up
Joe Biden has not been in office since January. Now he has spoken in his first major speech since Donald Trump’s inauguration and warns: “We cannot go on in this way”. The country had never been so split. But with his appearance he could even help Trump. Read more in the classification of our US correspondent Marc Etzold:
CDU general secretary Linnemann does not want to become a minister
Carsten Linnemann is CDU general secretary and a close confidante of the designated Chancellor. The fact that he moved from the party to Friedrich Merz’s cabinet was considered almost certain. But he now rejected a position. You can find out what is behind the decision from my colleagues from the capital office: star-Id-chief reporter Miriam Hollstein and political chief Jan Rosenkranz discuss in the “5-minute talk”.
Criticism of space flight
Six celebrities around pop star Katy Perry were completely detached: the purely female space mission was successful. But the women are sometimes heavily criticized. Numerous memes and ridicule are circulating on social networks. Industry colleagues also scold the extraterrestrial excursion: “This is beyond parody,” says model Emily Ratajkowski, for example.
The excursion was certainly not particularly sustainable. For the sake of fairness, however, it is added that women were not the first all tourists. The Blue Origin space company has been sending wealthy tourists and celebrities to the brink of the orbit since 2021.
What else is important today
- The federal government significantly underestimates the renovation backlog at dilapidated bridges in Germany. The Organization Transport & Environment publishes a report, according to which around 16,000 bridges are dilapidated.
- Can refugees be deported to Greece even though the asylum system has obvious deficits there? The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig is negotiating on this question.
- FC Bayern Munich is struggling to move into the semi -finals of the Champions League today. The Munich team would have to make up for a 1-2 deficit in the quarter-finals at Inter Milan (To see from 9 p.m. at DAZN).
