Friedrich Merz is to be elected Chancellor on May 6th. The CDU boss outlines how it should go on afterwards. This also includes an unusual step.
Probably future Chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to trigger a change in the population with rapid measures after the new government took office. “There will be a work program for the first weeks of the government. The first topics we will tackle are the tightened border controls with rejections, but also measures for bureaucrator dismantling and the introduction of the active pension,” said the CDU boss in the newspapers of the Funke media group. With regard to the promised U -turn in asylum policy, Merz said: “The new Federal Minister of the Interior will start immediately.”
At the same time, Merz announced that he wanted to shorten the parliamentary summer break so as not to lose time for important projects. “We want to extend the working hours of the Bundestag to summer this year,” he said. Specifically, this means that the Bundestag days differed differently than usual into July. “This is important so that our program, which must be adopted in the first half of the year, can also be decided by parliament,” emphasized the CDU boss.
Merz hopes for a change of mood until summer
“It is important that we improve the mood in the country by summer. The population has to notice that there is a difference when there is a new government,” emphasized Merz. He admitted that “there was still a lot of persuasion”.
According to current planning, CDU boss Friedrich Merz is to be elected Chancellor in the Bundestag on May 6th. The prerequisite is that the coalition agreement for all three partners CDU, CSU and SPD is approved. The CSU has already given the green light, there is still a small party congress at the CDU, the SPD has stopped a member survey since Tuesday.
Approval at the baker
Merz assumes a JA of the SPD basis. “I can’t and don’t want to imagine another result,” he said. With a view to the Union, he admits “some insecurities” during the coalition negotiations. “But since the text has existed and the content is clear, skepticism has largely gone. I now notice a really great approval. With the baker, on the street and wherever I meet people,” reported Merz.
Planned tax relief for small and medium -sized incomes was probably the future chancellor on conditions. “If the companies are doing better, we will end up gaining more scope for income tax cuts,” Merz told the Funke newspapers. “But we need growth. If our economy continues to shrink, the scope will be smaller.” His government will do everything to “achieve the scope for this through economic growth and through an economical housekeeping”.
No provocation of the SPD
Merz “vigorously” contradicted the impression that he had provoked the future coalition partner SPD with his statements on tax relief and minimum wage. “I quoted the coalition agreement: our projects are subject to financing,” said the CDU boss. He emphasized that the minimum wage was not increased by law, that was the responsibility of the minimum wage commission.
