California complains against Donald Trump’s tariffs

Did President Donald Trump have the right to impose his special tariffs alone? California is seriously affected and says: “This is how our democracy does not work”.

The government of the state of California has filed a lawsuit because of the far-reaching special tariffs of US President Donald Trump. The lawsuit is also directed against Trump himself. The California governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta argue that the president exceeds his constitutional powers with the introduction of the new tariffs.

The Republican had rely on an emergency law, which, however, did not allow him to have such far -reaching interventions in trade policy. The US constitution sees the responsibility for the collection of tariffs exclusively at the congress-not with the president. “The fact is: Trump does not have the sole power of only throwing the country’s economic order over the pile,” said Bonta at a press conference. “Our democracy doesn’t work that way.”

Can that all?

The measures had “triggered a global shock,” said Bonta. Trump should consider himself a “great businessman” – but his tariffs are “really terrible for the economy”. He claimed that they sent a signal to the international community – “in truth it is the Americans who wear the load”.

Governor scolds himself about Donald Trump: “Where is hell is the congress?”

In itself, California is one of the largest economies in the world – especially agriculture and technology -driven export management suffer from the special tariffs. Governor Newsom – a Democrat – emphasized that California is the largest industrial state in the United States.

“Customs policy affects us accordingly: no other region in the country is affected by the new tariffs as massively as California,” emphasized Newsom. At the same time, he addressed a clear appeal to the congress and the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson: “Where to hell is the congress? Where is the hell (…) Johnson?” Said Newsom. “It is time to do your job.”

Numerous lawsuits are now running against Trump and his government – many of them with the participation of California.
