Ukraine talks started in Paris

Europeans and representatives of the United States advise on opportunities for an end to the Ukraine War. Ukrainian negotiators are partly at the table. Little is communicated to the outside.

Representatives of the United States and several European countries have discussions about possible ways in Paris to end the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. France’s President Emmanuel Macron received the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a work-lunch in the Élysée Palace. In addition to the Ukraine War, the meeting should also be about the situation in the Middle East and tariffs.

Previously, Witkoff had already replaced with the diplomatic consultant in the Élysée Palace, Emmanuel Bonne. The external and security policy advisor to the executive federal government, Jens Plötner, also took part in this discussion round. Macron also called the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. Further discussions were scheduled for the afternoon in various formats. A press conference or speeches were initially not announced in Paris.

USA and Europeans pursue different approaches

Ukraine negotiators had also traveled to Paris for the talks. According to French information, the head of the Kiev Presidential Administration, Andrij Jermak, is to take part in a meeting with France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and his US colleague Rubio in the afternoon. Witkoff as well as advisors to the British and the German government should also be there. According to Ukrainian information, a meeting with the European representatives in the morning was about ways of a comprehensive fire break and security guarantees for Ukraine.

In this way, two very different approaches bounce into each other in Paris, as the war, which has been going on for more than three years, could be settled. Trump wants a rapid end of the war and a rapprochement between the United States and Russia. After contacts with Putin, Trump and Witkoff emphasized that he wanted her impression of peace. They are rather inclined to put Ukraine under pressure. Like Great Britain and other European countries, France, on the other hand, follows the approach of making Ukraine as strong as possible before negotiations and supporting them militarily.
