Good atmosphere in the Oval Office – Meloni Hugging Trump

The Europeans have a difficult time with US President Donald Trump. Not so Italy’s Prime Minister Meloni. At their meeting in the White House, things are easy – and both are full of praise.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recruited the favor of US President Donald Trump during a visit to the White House. A lot has a lot in common, said the right -wing politician, who is considered one of Trump’s preferred contacts among the European heads of government. She cited the fight against “Woke” ideologies or illegal migration as examples. Meloni said Trump accepted an invitation to Rome “in the near future” – it should also be about negotiations on Trump’s aggressive customs policy.

Based on Trump’s motto, Meloni emphasized that her goal was to “make the West great again”. The chair of the right party Fratelli d’Italia (brothers in Italy) took part in Trump’s inauguration in January and was previously guests in his residence Mar-A-Lago in Florida. Meloni’s words arrived at Trump well – he praised her in the highest tones. She did a “fantastic job” and conquered Europe by storm. She had become “a girlfriend” and a “very special person”, said the Republican.

Trump is optimistic with a view to customs deal with the EU

At their appearance in front of cameras in the White House, they both relaxed and joked together. According to Trump, the bilateral conversation with the Italian was also about tariffs. Like many other European heads of government, Meloni Trump’s announcement of new punitive tariffs criticized-at the same time, she tries to be a good relationship with the US president and wants to act as a “bridge builder”. Trump was convinced that there would be an agreement with the European Union on trade issues.

After great turbulence on the stock and financial markets, Trump surprisingly decided to grant many states – including the EU – for 90 days for 90 days. It is about punitive levies based on the trade deficit of the respective countries, except for China. The US President initially put part of his huge customs package on hold. The EU also announced that the planned counter-tariffs are initially exposed to US products for 90 days.

Relationship between the USA and Europe is heavily stressed

Meloni said at the joint appearance with Trump that a visit to the American in Italy could also be a chance to talk to other Europeans. She also addressed Ukraine. Meloni had shown herself as a reliable supporter of Europe’s Ukraine policy in the past. Now she said to Trump that the United States and Europe could work together to achieve permanent peace. “We defended the freedom of Ukraine together,” said Meloni.

Trump and his government have a difficult relationship with Europe. His vice JD Vance had offset the allies during a speech at the Munich Security Conference and accused them of restricting freedom of expression. France President Emmanuel Macron and Great Britain Prime Minister Keir Strandmer tried to promote European interests and US support for Ukraine in February. At least the latter fell on little fertile soil. Only shortly afterwards there was a scandal between Trump and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in the Oval Office.

“Europe has a lot of problems, and a large part of it has to do with immigration,” said Trump at the meeting with Meloni. “And I’m not a big fan of Europe and what you did with immigration.” Meloni, on the other hand, has a hard attitude on the topic – he praises her for that. “Europe is very important for me. Europe is very important for the world. I want Europe to be doing very well. I think they have to be much smarter.”
