Donald Trump loses patience with the staggering Ukraine negotiations. He threatens to withdraw from the talks if it is not possible to make rapid progress.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump also threatened to exit the United States from the Ukraine negotiations if there is no quick progress.
Trump said in Washington on Friday, if Ukraine or Russia made the conversations very difficult, the United States would do without its participation. He indicated a decision “in a very short time”.
“We want to do it quickly,” said Trump. “If one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we will simply say: ‘You are foolish, you are fools, you are terrible people’, and we will do without it.” He added: “But hopefully we don’t have to do that.” He continues to see “good chances to solve the problem,” said Trump. But the fights would have to end. When asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin played for a long time, Trump replied: “I hope not.”
Rubio: USA could set mediation efforts
According to the US State Department, Rubio added to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that “the United States will stop their efforts to impart peace if a clear way to peace will not be recognized”.
Rubio had previously been dissatisfied with European participation in Paris after the first Ukraine talks. In the coming days, it would have to decide whether peace in Ukraine is “feasible”, he said. The United States does not have time and “other priorities”. His country could stop his mediation efforts within a few days.
Trump initially claimed in the election campaign that he could end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. Later he named six months as a period of time. Now he apparently loses patience after a good two months.

Donald Trump loses patience after talks in Saudi Arabia did not make a breakthrough
On February 12, Trump had agreed an “immediate” start of talks after a phone call with the Russian head of state Vladimir Putin. Negotiations with representatives of Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia at the end of March did not make a breakthrough. Putin rejected a proposal for an unconditional ceasefire presented by the USA and Ukraine.
Rubio said Trump used a lot of time and energy to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. He is still interested in an agreement, but has many other priorities worldwide. However, if an agreement should not be possible, Trump may say: “We’re done,” said Rubio.
The spokesman for the Presidential Office in Moscow, Dmitri Peskow, said there is already progress and referred to Russia’s approval of the attack on the energy infrastructure. However, the consultations with the USA are “complicated because the topic is of course not easy”. Russia is determined to solve the conflict in Ukraine and to maintain its interests. The tour in Moscow remains open to a dialogue with the USA. “We stick to it.”
Rubio commented against the background of signs of progress in the talks between the USA and Ukraine. Trump said on Thursday that he would expect to sign an agreement on the extraction of minerals in Ukraine next week. According to Ukrainian information, the next round of negotiations will take place on April 24th. Trump penetrates an agreement that would allow the United States to participate in the extraction of Ukrainian mineral resources and rare minerals. Trump sees this as a repayment for military aid that the USA of Ukraine has granted Joe Biden under its predecessor.
Rubios threat with the end of the peace efforts also shows the growing frustration in the White House because real progress has so far failed to solve a whole series of geopolitical challenges.
Progress available, but there are complex challenges
The consultations in Paris with Rubio were the first substantial, high -ranking and personal conversations about Trump’s peace efforts in which European countries also took part. According to Rubio, US security guarantees were an issue in the event of a ceasefire. He did not give details, but only said that security guarantees were a question “which we can solve in an acceptable way for everyone”.
It was clear that it would be difficult to achieve a peace agreement, but there must be signs that it could soon come about. “Nobody claims that this is possible in twelve hours. But we want to see how big the differences are and whether they can be reduced, whether it is possible to move something within the period we have targeted.”
In Rome, US Vice President JD Vance later expressed himself optimistic at a meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that the war could be ended. “Since there are negotiations, I do not want to anticipate them, but we are optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war, this very brutal war.”
