Acknowledge the Crimea as Russian? Unpasted reports look like a new test balloon Washington in the peace efforts in the Ukraine War. The trouble with Kyiv is inevitable.
In the midst of the discussion about a possible end to the US mediation in the Ukraine War, primarily a new test balloon has been launched by the American side. The United States could be ready to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, the Bloomberg agency reported on informed circles. Russia had occupied the Ukrainian Black Sea Peninsula in 2014 and then annexed as a result of a referendum controlled by Moscow.
According to Bloomberg, such a concession could be a signal by US President Donald Trump, who wants to bring about a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine under all circumstances. So far, Russia in particular has closed these endeavors, while Ukraine has been ready for peace talks. The Bloomberg interlocutors, however, pointed out that no final decision had yet been made in the thought games about the Crimea.
Kyiv has not yet commented on these thought games. However, Ukraine categorically refuses to do without the country parts occupied by Russia. This applies to both the Crimea and the areas in eastern Ukraine, which were also incorporated into the Russian State Association by Moscow. The West categorically rejects recognition of the occupied areas as Russian. So far, this also applies to the USA.
Washington wants to quickly achieve a deal to terminate the Ukraine War – and otherwise may stop his efforts. He wanted to see an agreement “very soon”, said Trump in the White House. He did not specify how many days are mean.
At the same time, the US President emphasized that if the compromise on both sides is lacking, he was not interested in continuing his mediation efforts. “If one of the two parties makes it very difficult for some reason, we will simply say: you are stupid. You are fools, you are terrible people, and we will just leave it,” he said. “But hopefully we won’t have to do that.”
