The second round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the USA begins in Rome. While Trump threatens with consequences, Tehran signals willingness to compromise.
Representatives of Iran and the United States meet this Saturday in the Italian capital Rome for the second round of their nuclear negotiations.
The US delegation is again managed by the Middle East Sonderstander Steve Witkoff, the three-member Iranian nuclear team by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi. The foreign minister of Oman, Badr al-Busaidi, will again act as an intermediary.
US President Donald Trump has threatened Tehran with military consequences if the conversations should fail. His central goal is to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapons program.
Iran rejects complete waiver of nuclear technology
Witkoff recently emphasized that one agreement would only come about if Tehran fully stops his uranium enrichment and arms development program – a significant tightening compared to his previous statement that limited civilian accumulation is possible in the event of strict control.
Araghtschi was open to concessions in the nuclear program and the degree of uranium enrichment and emphasized that Iran did not want to develop any atomic bomb. In return, Iran calls for the cancellation of US sanctions. However, according to Araghtschi, a complete waiver of nuclear technology is not up for debate.
Further conflict points are the Iranian rocket program and the Middle East Policy, in particular the support of militant Islamist groups against the archenemy Israel.
