Meloni translator after dropouts at Trump
Interpreters are usually included at international meetings. Usually nobody perceives it – unless something goes wrong. Like at the meeting of Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump.
After a dropout in the White House, the interpreter of Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Valentina Maiolini-Rothbacher, asked publicly. “What happened is the worst thing that can happen to an interpreter,” said Maiolini-Rothbacher of the daily “Corriere della Sera”. The Italian had lost the thread in front of the cameras on Maundy Thursday in the Oval Office at a meeting with US President Donald Trump. When Meloni noticed this, she translated herself.
The interpreter now said: “Meloni had every right to interrupt me. It was a very important session, and every word had great weight. Fortunately, I said nothing stupid, but still …” To apologize, she led that she was never in the White House, nobody moderated the appointment and gave it loud shouting. Trump then spoke in person with the words “Please, please”. “Maybe all of that must have confused me.”
At important meetings, translators are mostly in international politics. Even if many politicians speak English, they prefer to talk in public appearances in their mother tongue – including Meloni in the White House. Maiolini-Rothbacher is one of the experienced interpreters. She was already there with many peaks.
