Politicians from the Union and SPD are calling for women as Federal President

After twelve men, politicians from the Union and SPD demand a woman as a German head of state. It would be a strong signal for equality, they say.

Representatives of the Union and SPD want a woman next German head of state.

“Of course, a woman in this office would be a very good signal for equality in our country,” said Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), the “Tagesspiegel” (online and Tuesday edition). In Germany, it was “always possible to choose an outstanding personality in the highest state office” from the broad democratic center. He was confident that this would also succeed this time.

SPD women want to “fight” for Federal President

The chairwoman of the SPD women, Maria Noichl, also demanded a woman as the successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “After twelve men, a woman is probably not too early,” said Noichl, the “Tagesspiegel”. The SPD women would “fight” for this, she announced.

In addition, the women in the CSU also campaigned for a woman in Bellevue Castle. “Of course, Germany is ripe for a federal president,” said the chairwoman of the Women’s Union of the CSU, Ulrike Scharf. “We will see when the right time is.” Women are “the elixir of life of a modern, value -based and responsible policy,” said Scharf.

The question of whether a woman could exercise this high office does not arise. For them, it is clear: “All politics is women’s policy! And therefore yes: a woman can also be our head of state.”

Next Federal President election in February 2027

The chairwoman of the Lower Saxony Women’s Union, Mareike Wulf (CDU) was similar. She called it an “extremely important signal” if the Federal President’s office with its enormous symbolic power was occupied with a woman for the first time. “Because it is time,” emphasized the CDU politician.

It is important to find “a personality that serves our country as a compass, gives orientation and appeals to all groups of our society”. There are enough women in Germany who have all the prerequisites for this. Now the parties are required to “make courageous and future -oriented proposals”.

The next federal presidential election will take place regularly in February 2027. The 69-year-old incumbent Frank-Walter Steinmeier completes his second term, so it is therefore no longer allowed to run.
