With her statements about the role of the church, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner triggered a lot of criticism – she also not only gets popularity from her own ranks.
Bundestag president Julia Klöckner (CDU) has brought broad criticism for her statements on political statements in the churches. The Secretary General of the future coalition partner SPD, Matthias Miersch, told the “Rheinische Post”: “Christians have always interfered politically. And that’s a good thing.”
Klöckner had said the “Bild am Sonntag” to risk the Church to become arbitrary if they constantly gave up statements on daily issues and no longer had the fundamental questions of life and death in mind. “Then unfortunately it will also be interchangeable.”
Allegation of the double standards
Clearly, the church could also comment on km / h, but it does not necessarily pay church tax for that, said Klöckner. It is a free country, “but I think this sensible accompaniment is expected from the church, this answer to questions that I have in my everyday life, perhaps also comfort and stability.” The interview was conducted before the Pope’s death.
Miersch said that after the death of the Pope Francis, he was all the more irritating, “when Christians demand that Church are to keep out of political debates. The C in the party name does not tolerate the request to clergymen not to take a position and to limit itself to pastoral care”.
Criticism from the CDU to Julia Klöckner
The Green MP Andreas Audretch accused Klöckner of only tolerating political statements by the church if they fit into the conservative worldview. “The moment when it comes to focusing on core questions of Christianity, namely the preservation of creation, climate protection, environmental protection or focusing on the equality of all people, she has defense reactions,” said Audetsch RTL/NTV.
Critical voices also come from their own party. When asked at Klöckner’s desire for more political reluctance to the churches, the member of the Bundestag and former NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet said: “Church was always political”. “If you derive from the Christian message that you should change the world, to change the world, to shape the world, then this is always a political message.” This also refers to all big popes. Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, praised Laschet as a “priest of the poor”.
