As early as June 2022, Pope Francis ordered that he should be buried in the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. These and other wishes are in the will.
After the death of Pope Francis, the Vatican published the will. After an unofficial translation of the German Press Agency, the text has the following wording:
The will of Pope Francis
“In the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen. Since I feel that the sunset of my earthly life is approaching, and with lively hope of eternal life, I would like to express my will only in terms of the place of my burial.
I have always entrusted my life and my priestly and episcopal office to the mother of our Lord, St. Mary. Therefore, I ask that my remains in anticipation of the day of resurrection in the papal basilica Santa Maria Maggiore rest.
I wish that my last earthly journey ends exactly in this very old Marienheiligtum, where I used to go to prayer at the beginning and at the end of every apostolic journey to trust the Immaculate Mother and to thank her for her kind and motherly care.
That was Pope Francis’ last appearance – one day before his death
It is his last public appearance, Pope Francis is noticeably weakened, his skin pale, his eyes came into being – he can hardly keep her open. On the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he lifts his hands to Easter blessing with a lot of strength

Further
I ask that my grave in the niche in the niche in the side aisle between the Paulinerkapelle (Cappella della Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza chapel of the mentioned papal basilica is prepared, as stated in the attached system. The grave must be in the ground, simply, without special decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus.
The cost of preparing my funeral is covered with the sum of the charity, which I have prompted to transfer to the papal basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, and from which I have given the corresponding instructions to Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas, extraordinary commissioner of the Capitolo Liberiano.
May the Lord who liked me and continue to pray for me, give a well -deserved wage. I sacrificed the suffering, which was present in the last part of my life in the last part of my life.
