Two of the 135 cardinals that are supposed to choose a new Pope have canceled due to health problems. This also reduces the two -thirds majority necessary for a choice.
Two cardinals who are entitled to vote in the upcoming election of a new Pope have canceled their participation in the conclave. The emeritus archbishop of Valencia, Antonio Cañizares (79), will not participate for health reasons, reported Spanish media, including the broadcaster Cope of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference. Already on Monday, the emeritus archbishop of Sarajevo, Vinko Puljić (79), apologized on the same reason, reported the Croatian TV station RTL.
With the two cancellations, the number of voting members in the election assembly drops to 133 members. The two -thirds majority of the votes that a cardinal needs to be elected to the Pope also decreases from 90 to 89.
