Donald Trump: Al Gore compares his policy with the Nazis

US President Donald Trump is more and more designing the state according to its own rules. A decisive contradiction comes from Al Gore, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Vice President under Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001. The Democrat feels reminded of dark times in history through Trump.

According to the US portal “Politico”, Gore Trump’s second term, which started only a few months ago, the Nazi rule in the Third Reich compared. “The Trump administration is trying to create its own preferred version of reality,” said the 77-year-old at an event at the opening of the “San Franciscos Climate Week”. He mainly dealt with the question of how the Nazis got their power in the 1930s.

Gore confessed to comparing the Third Reich with another movement: “It was uniquely evil.” Nevertheless, the former Vice President sees parallels to today’s developments: “There are important teachings from the history of this emerging evil.” Gore quoted the famous philosopher and sociologist Theodor Adorno: Adorno had written that the first step on the way of the Germans was the “conversion of all questions of truth into matters of power” to Nazi rule. The Nazis “had the core of the distinction between true and wrong attacks”. According to Gore, the same can also be observed with the Trump government.

As a concrete examples, the former Vice President cited statements by Trump and his ministers on climate change: “They say that the climate crisis is a dizziness invented by the Chinese to destroy the American industry. They claim that coal is clean. They say, cause wind turbines. After his political career, Gore became one of the most prominent climate protection activists. With his documentary “An uncomfortable truth” in particular, he drew a lot of attention to the topic. In 2007 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment.

Other authoritarian rulers would have made foreigners into scapegoats and fueled xenophobia, Gore said in his speech in San Francisco. “It’s all about the pursuit of power. Our constitution, which was written by our founders, should protect us from a threat that is identical to Donald Trump.”

Other democratic politicians have recently been opposed to Trump with clear words. In the congress, the Senator Cory Booker gave the longest speech in protest against Trump policy that had ever been in the house. Former US President Barack Obama recently criticized the incumbent clearly and asked the Americans to resist.
