Corona in schools: KMK President meets students after pandemic fire letter

In an open letter online, some student representatives had denounced the situation in schools during the pandemic – there was also talk of a “contamination plan” by politicians. Now there was a conversation.

The President of the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK), Karin Prien (CDU), exchanged views with the Federal Student Conference and student representatives from the federal states after a fire letter from students about the Corona situation in schools.

The conversation was “intensive and very constructive”, said the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education on Tuesday afterwards.

“It is extremely important to me that the students are heard and that we exchange ideas with one another on a regular basis. The students rightly demand to be heard in good time. They also complain that communication is often too late. We all have to get better here, »said the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education, who is leading the KMK as President this year.

Some student representatives had recently denounced the situation in the schools in the corona pandemic in an open letter online under the hashtag #WirWerdenlaut. They accused politicians of letting them down. “The current search plan is irresponsible and lacks solidarity.” Among other things, air filters in all schools, smaller learning groups and PCR pool tests were required. The letter was also directed against the obligation to be present. Prien had agreed to an interview.

Representatives of the initiative concerned were not involved in the exchange on Tuesday, as a KMK spokesman confirmed on Thursday. An offer of talks had already been made to her on Friday. This was renewed on Monday. So far there has been no reaction. An appointment is planned for next week.

There were no concrete results. The KMK President said that the firm was still determined to keep the schools open as much as possible and that the majority of the student representatives had given their approval. «When it comes to air filters, we follow the scientific recommendations and guidelines: We install air filters where there is no ventilation. But air filters cannot replace ventilation.»

Tests, masks, free masks and 3G rules for final exams and the psychological stress on schoolchildren as well as vaccination education at schools were also discussed. “I will now also discuss all the topics from this conversation with my colleagues in the other countries.”

(NOTE: Correction of a report from February 8th: The original report could have given the impression that Prien had already spoken directly to the initiators of #WirWerdenLaut. It is now made clear who was there and that the initiative #WirWerdenLaut bosher was not among the participants.)
