At the beginning of the year, Miliz M23 supported by Rwanda occupied areas in the east of the Congo. Now rebels and government want to bury their twists. When is unclear.
The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 militia have agreed on an end to the fights in the east of the Central African country. The aim is to achieve a permanent ceasefire, the conflict parties said on Wednesday evening. The cessation of the fights should apply to the “duration of the conversations” via a ceasefire and “up to their end”.
“Both sides reaffirm their will to an immediate end of hostility,” says the explanation published by both sides. The agreement was achieved in discussions mediated by Qatar. Since 2021, however, agreed fire breaks have always failed between the government and the M23 militia.
Democratic Republic of Congo is not just fighting against militias
The militia had taken large areas in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo since January, including the provincial capitals Goma and Bukavu. According to UN, Rwanda supports the M23 militia with thousands of soldiers.
The Congolese government accuses the neighboring country of wanting to exploit the mineral resources of the eastern provinces of North and South Kivu. Rwanda denies this and states to want to fight armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in which it sees a danger to your own area.
