Some are already sitting on packed suitcases. Others are still waiting for the uncertain location. Tens of thousands of people from Syria who once came as refugees are now German citizens.
The number of Syrians living in Germany has recently dropped slightly. However, this only has to do with exits. Because many refugees who had entered in 2015 and 2016 are now fulfilling the prerequisites for naturalization. Anyone who becomes a German citizen no longer counts as a foreigner if they have a further nationality in addition to the German.
As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on request, Syrian citizens lived in Germany at the end of March 968,899. Among them were 10,729 those who are obliged to leave, but most of whom – 9,649 Syrian citizens – had tolerated.
A month earlier, as of February 28, 972,470 Syrians in Germany, 3,571 more than at the end of March.
Deportations to Syria have not existed since 2012. In cases in which asylum seekers from Syria still have to leave Germany under coercion, they are brought to another European country that is responsible for their asylum procedure according to the so-called Dublin rules.
Limited interest in promotion
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, more than 600 people have returned to Syria with financial support for state German agencies. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has been supporting voluntary trips to Syria as part of a federal-state program since January 13.
In addition, the BUND in 2024 refinanced the departure of 87 people to Syria, which was funded by programs by the federal states. In the first quarter of this year there was such a assumption of costs according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior for 77 exits. A spokesman pointed out that an application for a federal state for every departure funded by a country program would not be applied to the federal government. Also, not every Syrian who travels is striving for state funding.
In 2023, 75,485 Syrian nationals were naturalized in Germany, after around 48,000 naturalizations in the previous year. The data for 2024 and the first months of this year are not yet available. The new Citizenship Act, which has been in force since June 2024, provides for shortened waiting times for naturalization. However, if you want to become a German, you must continue to make a living and have sufficient knowledge of German. Serious crimes or anti -constitutional activities are also opposed to naturalization.
A rebel alliance led by Islamist Haiat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS) had taken control in the Syrian capital Damascus on December 8th. The fallen long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia.
