80 years after the end of the Second World War, there is argument: Can you commit the anniversary with Russia that wages war against Ukraine? Klaus Ernst from the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance has no concerns.
The BSW politician Klaus Ernst wants to commemorate the Second World War together with representatives of Russia at the usual reception of the anniversary of the end of the war in the Russian message. “I assume that I will be invited and will then go,” said the Bavarian state chairman of the alliance Sahra Wagenknecht of the German Press Agency.
“I have no reservations at all,” said Ernst. “On the contrary: for me this is critically seen. At that time, the Soviet Union was not only Russia, but also the Ukraine and a number of other independent states today. Ernst continued that the victory against Hitler-Germany “saved me personally from growing up in fascism”.
Because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the Federal Foreign Office had recommended that state representatives of Russia were not invited to commemorate the end of the war 80 years ago. The BSW politician practiced sharp criticism. “For me there is a bit of revisionism behind it,” said Ernst. “Everything that is Russian per se becomes damn. For me this is part of preparations for war against Russia. On the other hand, I defend with everything I have.” Some see May 8th as a liberation from fascism, but as a defeat. “This defeat should now be relativized afterwards.”
Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022 and holds parts of the neighboring country. Ernst said that the war had geopolitical causes. “Both sides are to blame for this conflict,” he added.
US President Donald Trump’s suggestions offer “a realistic chance” for an end of the war in Ukraine. “In view of the possible termination of the war, I think that Ukraine has to give up areas,” said Ernst.
