Vitali Klitschko: For peace, this may be a “painful solution”
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj may have to agree to a “painful solution” to get peace, Klitschko said. However, the Ukrainians would “never accept” a Russian “occupation”.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow met with the US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Putin received Witkoff in Kremlin on Friday, as television pictures showed. It was the fourth meeting of the two men since US President Donald Trump took office in January.
The conversations take place against the background of talks about a fire break in Ukraine. Most recently, the focus was particularly on the Crimea peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. The US government recently proposed to recognize the annexation to advance the peace negotiations.
USA urge Ukraine to leave the Crimea Russia
The Ukrainian government had repeatedly ruled out to cede the Crimea in the course of an agreement with Moscow. Russia, which began a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, claims four other Ukrainian regions in addition to the Crimea.
US President Donald Trump has been pushing Ukraine and Russia into a ceasefire for months. According to US media, a proposal for a ceasefire presented by the United States is far towards the Russian demands.
According to this, the United States could actually recognize the Russian crew of the East Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Cherson and Saporischeschja, as was the annexation of the Crimea peninsula by Russia in 2014. According to the reports, Washington Moscow also guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO.
